Our Philosophy

Our philosophy and approach is based on Dr. King’s idea of the ‘Beloved Community’

WHY BELOVD?

Dr. King envisioned the Beloved Community as a society based on justice, equal opportunity and love of one’s fellow human being.

It’s a ‘global vision, in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood’.- The King Center

Like Dr. King and many others, we believe that Beloved Community is not a lofty or unattainable concept.

The Beloved Community is not devoid of interpersonal, group or international conflict. Instead, it recognises that conflict is an inevitable part of the human experience.

Dr. king believed that conflicts could be resolved peacefully and that adversaries could be reconciled through a mutual commitment to nonviolence and a hope for a better tomorrow.

All conflicts in The Beloved Community should end with reconciliation of adversaries cooperating together in a spirit of friendship and goodwill.

We believe that in order to build this Beloved Community, the work must begin in workplaces, organisations and institutions of education.

It must begin:

  • In the spaces where societal narratives are built; where decisions about hiring, firing and pay are made. Ultimately where futures are determined

  • In corner offices and classrooms

  • In work environments and work cultures.

Note: we spend around one-third of our lives at work – that can significantly impact one’s well-being, outlook on life and social life, relationships and more

  • In addressing and eradicating bias from spaces where decisions are made, as well as among individuals who are raising and influencing our new generations

All this is at the core of our work and the heart of what we are trying to achieve.

At BELOVD we believe that all intersections of humanity deserve the attention and representation needed to improve outcomes for their communities. We also understand that our lived experience can only ever cover a certain number of these.

To ensure our programs, consultancy and training is representative and delivered by respective experts, we host a large network of experts and delivery partners across our various pillars.
