What is human strategy?

Human strategy is the practice of aligning an organisation's people and culture with its business strategy. It makes sure the plan is something the people inside believe in and can deliver, and something the audience outside trusts.

Why it matters

Most strategies fail in the room, not on the page.

Plans stall when the people who have to deliver them were never brought with them. AI pilots stall for the same reason. Campaigns fail when they are made about communities rather than with them.

Research from the Institute for Real Growth finds that overperforming companies are twice as effective at bringing in whole-brained talent: people who hold analytical, creative and empathetic perspectives at once. Human strategy is the operating model for that finding.

How it works

The intelligence loop

01ListenCollect signal from communities, research and channels.
02DecideTurn signal into strategy, AI systems and operating choices.
03AlignMake the people inside able and willing to deliver it.
04ExpressMake it seen and felt, in content and in the room.

Every experience and piece of content generates new signal, and the loop starts again.

Questions

Human strategy: common questions

What is human strategy?

Human strategy is the practice of aligning an organisation's people and culture with its business strategy. It makes sure the plan is something the people inside believe in and can deliver, and something the audience outside trusts.

How is human strategy different from HR or people strategy?

People strategy manages the workforce. Human strategy connects the workforce to everything else: the business plan, AI and data, the brand, the audience and the communities an organisation depends on.

How is it different from brand or marketing strategy?

Marketing strategy works outside-in, taking culture into the brand. Human strategy works in both directions, so what the brand promises and what the people inside deliver are the same thing.

Where does AI fit into human strategy?

AI changes how work is done, and adoption depends on people. Human strategy treats AI as a people question as much as a technology question: who uses it, how they are trained and what it is and is not used for.
